Rooted in Calm

It hasn’t been the best start to 2025 if I’m honest. Health scares followed by a nasty chest infection when I thought life was getting back to normal. It really brought home to me that regulating your nervous system matters. When you stay balanced, you feel your emotions without them taking over or pushing you into survival mode. Fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses serve a purpose in real danger, but they shouldn’t become your daily default.

The trouble is, when your nervous system is constantly on high alert, you end up getting triggered by people and events. Your body doesn’t understand the difference between actual physical danger and the nerves you feel before an important presentation or before doing a live on social media. And what do you do? You end up leaning into self-soothing practices that aren’t helpful. Ever found yourself over or under eating? Over spending? Drinking too much alcohol? Spending hours scrolling? Spending your weekend on the sofa binge-watching TV as you’ve no motivation to go anywhere or do anything? Picking fights or getting annoyed with loved ones for no real reason?

These are all ways your nervous system tries to cope when it’s overstimulated. The good news? You can train your body to feel safe again. Through small, mindful changes, you can shift from survival mode to a place where you feel calmer, more in control, and enjoy life.
