What will bring you joy this season?

What will bring you joy this season?

It’s my birthday this week and the autumn equinox so I can no longer pretend it’s still summer. I’m a real lover of the summer months but have worked hard over the last few years at embracing autumn and all it has to offer rather than dread the nights drawing in!

So, with that in mind here is my list for my intentional autumn. It’s a list of things to enjoy and look forward to so that I make the most of the autumn. Like my summer list it reflects the fact that we’re still living with limitations on what we can do.

  • Enjoy a lovely holiday by the sea.

  • Eat outside or have a coffee outside at least once while we’re on said holiday (it’s in Britain so weather dependent!).

  • Decorate the house for autumn.

  • Swap my scented candles for warm vanillas and cinnamon.

  • Savouring a glass of red wine with my scented candles burning and the fairy lights lit.

  • Learn a new seasonal recipe.

  • Order and plant lots of lovely bulbs that will flower in the spring.

  • Refresh my garden pots with violas and primulas to brighten up the darker months.

  • Enjoy exploring my autumn wardrobe as the weather gets cooler.

  • Continue my adventure in learning to draw.

  • Have a wrapped-up walk on a beach (as I write this I still haven’t ticked that off my beach walk from my summer list – hoping it will be done by the time this is published! Fingers crossed.).

  • Make the time to appreciate the autumn colour.

  • Walk through crunchy autumn leaves.

  • Run in the nature reserve noticing the changes of the season.

  • See at least one friend in person rather than by video call each month. (I never thought I’d need to be typing that as an intention but given that as I write this we’re still subject to a local lockdown I feel I want it on the list!)

  • Continue to have posies of cut flowers from my garden for as long as possible.

The reason I do this every season is because much of the above could be done at any time and so there is the danger that it ends up not getting done at all. We can be great at making progress on our goals, getting our work done and keeping family life flowing smoothly and in all that busyness forget to make time for and appreciate the little things that will bring us joy. This is my list of things that will bring me moments of joy this autumn and that’s so important, especially this year.
